Our Guide to Buying the Right Marquee
What Is a Folding Marquee?
A folding marquee — also known as a pop up gazebo — is a portable shelter built around a concertina frame that opens out in seconds, with no tools and no loose parts to assemble. They come in a range of sizes and frame strengths, suiting everything from a single market stall to a full council event setup.
Every Hercules marquee is made up of two parts: the frame and the canopy top. Setup takes around 60 seconds and pack-down is just as quick, so it’s easy to store and transport between events. The canopy is waterproof, UV-treated and flame-retardant — built to handle the harsh Australian sun and sudden downpours alike.
These are versatile shelters: as practical for schools, sports clubs, councils and businesses as they are for private outdoor use.

The Benefits of Owning a Marquee
Portable shade, anywhere: A folding marquee gives you shade you can take to any site and raise in minutes — you’re under cover almost as soon as you arrive.
Protection from harsh sun: Australian summers are long and the UV is intense. On an open oval, a car park or a market site with little natural shade, a marquee protects staff, visitors and stock from heat and sunburn.
Cover in wet weather, too: A good marquee isn’t only for sun. Hercules canopies are 100% waterproof, so a sudden shower won’t shut down your stall or event — you stay open and dry.
Built for serious use: Hercules marquees aren’t just for recreation. With detachable walls and commercial-grade steel, aluminium or magnesium frames, they’re built for schools, councils, sports clubs, hire fleets and event companies that need a shelter to perform week after week.

How to Decide on a Marquee Size
When choosing the right marquee size, think about your space, your crowd and what you’ll fit underneath.
The 2.5×2.5m and 3x3m sizes are the most popular for markets and stalls — they fit standard stall bays and are easy for one or two people to handle.
The 3x3m and 3x6m sizes are the go-to for trade shows and school or club events, where you need room for people, tables, lighting or flooring. 3×4.5m and 4x4m sit in between for a little more coverage.
Need to shelter a larger group? The 4x6m and 4x8m suit councils, schools and big community events — just remember the larger frames are heavier and usually need four people to set up. Browse our range of marquee sizes.
Key Factors for a Long-Lasting Marquee
Beyond size, a few things separate a marquee that lasts years from one that fails after a season.
Use & frequency: Be honest about how often you’ll use it and in what conditions. Occasional private use and weekly commercial use call for very different frames.
Operation: Check the weight and the open/close mechanism. A pull-pin slider makes raising and lowering the legs faster and safer.
Canopy material: Look at the GSM and the Denier (‘D’) rating — they tell you the canopy’s thickness and durability. Hercules commercial models use a heavy 500D PVC-coated polyester that’s waterproof, UV-treated and built for prolonged sun.
Frame material: Steel is strong and very stable but heavier; aluminium alloy is corrosion-resistant and lighter for frequent transport; magnesium (our PRO MAG) delivers heavy-duty strength at a much lighter weight. Choose by how you’ll carry and use it.
Joints & fittings: The brackets carry the load. Reinforced nylon, cast aluminium or moulded magnesium joints hold up far better than cheap plastic.
Replacement parts & warranty: Make sure frames, canopies and parts are available, so one broken component doesn’t mean a whole new marquee. A long framework warranty is a good signal of how much faith the maker has in the frame.

Marquee Buying FAQs
Why Shouldn't I Buy a Cheap Gazebo?
A cheap gazebo isn't built to last. Many of our customers come to us after a budget tent has failed, and they've learned that investing in a commercial-grade marquee is the smarter, more cost-effective choice over time. A durable marquee cuts down on waste and replacements, performs reliably event after event, and delivers far better long-term value.
Are Hercules Marquees Durable?
Yes. Every Hercules™ marquee (pop up gazebo) is quick to set up and pack down thanks to its sturdy frame design, and the canopy is waterproof, flame-retardant and UV-treated for year-round outdoor use. With proper care, a Hercules marquee will last for years — just follow the user guide to avoid damage from misuse or rough handling. We offer six frame options to suit different needs and budgets, plus two canopy fabric weights.
Are Hercules Marquees Wind-Rated?
Our alloy marquees are built for strength and rated to withstand wind speeds between 50kph and 80kph depending on the model, with an individual wind-action engineering report for each alloy model. That said, no shelter is made for extreme weather — never leave a marquee up unattended or exposed to strong winds, as it can be damaged and cause damage around it. Always respect the conditions.
Can I leave a marquee up in strong winds, heavy rain, or overnight unattended?
A folding marquee is designed for shade and shelter, not for strong winds or heavy rain, and leaving one up in severe weather can cause serious damage. Always secure your marquee with pegs, guy ropes and weights — wind can pick up unexpectedly — and never leave it unattended in poor conditions. In wet weather, make sure water can't pool on the canopy, as the extra weight can cause sagging or collapse.
How do the side walls attach to the canopy?
Side walls attach quickly using a 50mm-wide Velcro strap that runs along the edge of the canopy. Each wall also has large Velcro strips that connect securely to the next wall, giving you a neat, gap-free finish around the marquee.
How many people fit under a marquee?
Check out our guide below to find the ideal gazebo size for your event. Keep in mind that capacity may be reduced if guests are seated. Explore more size options here.
| Size Range | People Standing (Approx.) |
| 2.5x2.5m | 8 |
| 3x3m | 12 |
| 3x4.5m | 18 |
| 3x6m | 24 |
| 4x4m | 26 |
| 4x6m | 40 |
| 4x8m | 52 |
How big is the package, and how do I prepare for pickup?
Hercules marquees fold down into a flat package — typically around 160cm long by 30cm wide — which fits in a vehicle with the front and back seats folded down. Otherwise, a ute or trailer is best. The package is heavy, so you'll need two people to lift it. Note that a 4m marquee packs down to around 210cm long. Check the package dimensions and weight on each model's product page before collection.
